Cafe Racer Customs R45
By Gareth Roberts - 24 Apr 14
Hot on the heels of their high-performance super-customs the Magnum and CRC6, Cafe Racer Customs have taken on a more familiar custom donor, the Boxer Twin, in the shape of this bravely coloured CRC R45. With the custom scene awash with well-crafted Bavarian Airheads Will & Simon knew they had to build something that would stand out in the crowd, but it's not all about the paint on this carefully crafted and finished bike.
This heavily retro styled ride draws inspiration from the old Rennesport motifs and the BMW art cars. This fun-filled 35bhp surf bike is as cool as they come, and in the crowded Boxer scene is clearly visible with its ivory white frame, purple engine and blue tank. It’s certainly a head turner!
The tidy little tank is off an unloved Honda, and tooled to fit the BMW frame. Its fluid smooth lines are a welcome contrast to the bulky stock BMW tank, and are accentuated by the white contrast detailing. It leaves a clean gap above the shocking purple stove enameled engine, which has been piecemeal rebuilt by CRC. The hubs, yokes, forks and frame are all also stove enameled.
The frame has been de-lugged and tidied, and the side stand relocated. The rear subframe is CRC custom welded supporting a Stan Leather upholstered seat, and a neat CRC fabricated steel tail tidy.
For me the real focus of the bike is the exquisite one-off CRC built all stainless 2-1-2 twin pea shooter exhaust system that threads through the frame. It sounds as stunning as it looks.
The headlight is a Honda CL160 unit with a refurbished speedo with a custom printed face. The Renthal bars house Doherty gum grips, with Honda satin finished switch gear and master cylinder mounted. The stainless braided hoses are Hel, and the single sided front disc and caliper are Brembo.
The R45 forks have been refurbished with reground stanchions, and fitted with leather ‘CRC’ inserts.
The wheels are stainless spokes with ally rims, and the front mudguard and rear crap-flap are CRC ally fabricated, as are the billet rear sets.
The electrics are supported by a new bespoke felted wiring loom with Deutch connectors and bullets. Every nut and bolt is stainless. The creamy paint is by Khameleon Customs.
The finishing on this cool little Beamer is to the usual impeccable high standards set by CRC, and is ready to tear up the coastal roads this summer. Although this distinctive and unusual bike may cause outrage amongst the more dour of Boxter purists, it certainly has a bright demeanor that makes me smile.
