Scram Africa 2017
By Ross Sharp - 21 Sep 17
Apparently here in the Shed we are living the dream. In some respects that's true but how come we keep missing the best events and trips each year? Scram Africa has been on our hit list since it's inception a few years ago but we're yet to sign up. 2018, it must happen.
Karles Vives, the man behind the super successful Fuel Bespoke Motorcycles, and more recently the accompanying apparel brand, decided to offer a taste of Dakar style desert adventure to folk uninterested by modern KTM dune bashing and lardy GS cruising trips. Scram is for either fairly stock road bikes with an off-road twang, a Ducati Desert Sled or knobbly tyred Yamaha XSR700 entered this year, but preferably customised machinery from a rode-tinted time of simplicity. My stock Cagiva Elefant for example wouldn't be eligible without at least some custom mods. Watch this space!
Triumph Bonnevilles, Yamaha SRs and XTs etc are fair game, in fact Bike Shed Timm had prepped his 2001 Hinckley for the trip but had to withdraw last minute. Karles W650 (pictured) faired well with it's deceiving 60s desert sled (the original versions) looks with more modern reliability. Now freshened up his bike is now for sale - links down below.
For now, revel in these absolutely wonderful images by one of the best photographers to grace the custom scene, Götz Göppert. Remember the massive prints exhibited at Bike Shed Paris & London 2016.... those were his handiwork.
Scram Africa 2018 will be a hot ticket so make sure you book early.
